Description:

Located on the Iranian coast of the Persian gulf. The port city of Siraf was an important stopping place for ships traeling from the orient with Chinese and Asian goods. From pre-Islamic times, merchant residences were built, and later local prayer places which date to the earliest Islamic times. Only ruins survive today.

There are two old mosques in this city. The first is known as the Siraf Mosque. It dates from the 9th century.

The other mosque is a very small early mosque. It has never been properly excavated. It was part of a residential section, and appears to face Petra. Residence would simply line up in the courtyard to pray. This was communicated to nabataea.net by several long standing residents of the town.

Later in the 9th century a larger congregational mosque was built closer to the sea port known as the Friday Mosque.

The main Muslim traders were Umayyad Sunni who had settled in Siraf around 750 AD. (130 AH) The Ibn Abi Taleb Mosque (27.670362° 52.337346°) is a good example of an Umayyad mosque. (locally known as Mosque of Sunnis Amir al-Momenin Ali ibn Abi Taleb)
